Compact campsite lanterns: output, power and packing size

The longest runtime is not always the most useful light.

For an evening at camp, consider where the light will sit or hang, how you will recharge it and the brightness you need for the task. Advertised maximum output and maximum runtime usually refer to different settings. This guide compares three rechargeable lights without claiming measured brightness, beam quality or field-tested reliability.

BEFORE YOU BUY

What to measure

  1. Check the storage pocket and the lantern’s listed dimensions and weight.
  2. Identify the hanging point or table space and verify the attachment works there.
  3. Count the hours you expect to use it and check runtime at the relevant brightness setting.

How to choose

Editorial interpretation of the listed specifications—not hands-on findings.

Read output and runtime together

AlpenGlow Mini lists 40 hours at 5 lumens; AlpenGlow 250 lists up to 200 hours at 2.5 lumens. These low settings are not equivalent. Goal Zero also distinguishes average lantern output from full-battery output and separates one-sided from two-sided runtime. Compare matched modes instead of placing every highest number in the same column.

Plan the charging method

The Mini uses USB-C, while the 250 uses Micro-USB and adds USB-A device charging. The Goal Zero uses USB charging and a narrow body with both lantern and flashlight functions. If you use a lantern to charge another device, energy used that way is unavailable for lighting. Do not assume the published light-only runtime still applies.

Understand the limits

The cited IP ratings are manufacturer claims, not our test results. They do not make these products interchangeable with a submersible light. BioLite specifically advises against submerging the Mini or leaving it in an extended downpour. These are campsite comparison options; this article does not establish any as an adequate sole light for hiking after dark. Check manuals and your trip requirements.

THE PRACTICAL CHOICE

Choose the attachment, charging connection and useful brightness first. Treat runtime figures as setting-specific claims, with a margin for real use.

01 / BioLite

BioLite AlpenGlow Mini

Compact option with USB-C. It has no charge-out port; stated runtimes are manufacturer figures, not our tests.

02 / BioLite

BioLite AlpenGlow 250

Higher output and device charging, with more weight. Its long low-mode runtime is at a lower output than the Mini’s low mode.

03 / Goal Zero

Goal Zero Lighthouse Micro Flash

A narrow combination light. Brightness numbers distinguish average output from full-battery output; do not compare just the largest number.
